Pelvic floor physiotherapists are often dealing with a variety of sexual dysfunctions. We are asked to counsel our patients on returning to sexual intercourse or practices, but we do not often get education on the physiology and psychology of sex and sexuality in the basic pelvic floor courses. During this course, physiotherapists will learn the development of sexuality through the lifespan and how it is affected by aging. They will also learn the psychology of sex and sexuality and how to deal with pre-existing beliefs and attitudes about sex when treating pelvic floor disorders. Discussions on sex with illness and disability will be highlighted, including sexual aids to help patients return to sexual functioning after major neurologic or oncologic illnesses. Counselling patients’ sexual practices to protect and heal their pelvic floor will also be explored. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the science behind sex and how to help your patients safely and effectively with pelvic floor disorders return to sex and intimacy.
- Participants will be able to describe the development of sex and sexuality through the lifespan.
- Participants will be able to illustrate the role of the pelvic floor in sexual practices.
- Participants will be able to educate their patients how to return to intimacy and intercourse after chronic illness.
- Participants will be able to prescribe sex aides that may help participants participate in intercourse with chronic pain or disability.
