Join this unique venue for learning one of the most important skills that physiotherapists can learn in today’s evidence-based landscape. If you treat people who have pain for more than 12 weeks, this course is for you. This course is 100% required for anyone who treats pelvic pain because every pelvic pain condition has significant central pain mechanisms.
This is not a Graded Motor Imagery course. This is not a pain education course. This is a course to teach you how to integrate those skills and so much more into your every day practice providing an evidence-informed framework for the treatment of pain.
Join us on this small group, interactive, computer-based course where you can learn, interact with the group, and do the labs by video-based instruction all from the comfort of your home. Get your colleagues at your office involved. Receive a 10% discount on your registration if you recruit a non-pelvic health physiotherapist from your clinic to register for the course with you! It also gives you the added bonus of an instant partner to practice the labs with. Save on travel and accommodation costs if you are outside the GTA and have always wanted to do this course.
You must have access to speakers/web camera!
This practical and unique course will help you to develop a framework for your clinical practice that teaches you how to assess and treat central pain mechanisms, since they are the main driver of pain that lasts longer than three months. Tissue-based treatment is important in order to change the biological inputs into the nervous system, but how do we move beyond just treating the tissues? Mind-body connection has been a popular topic over the past decade when looking at treating pain in a clinical setting but it has not always been linked to pain education. Learn how educating patients about the nervous system, qi gong, yoga, guided relaxation and guided imagery fit into your clinical practice in order to down regulate the sensitive nervous system. Learn how to identify potential threats that upregulate your patient’s nervous systems, and contribute to their ongoing pain state. This course will give you a deep understanding of the brain and the nervous system, and how to target both of them appropriately using evidence-based practice.
This is a lecture-format and lab-based course. Included in the cost of the course are handouts and audio exercise resources for each of the techniques learned (see resources tab).
Through completion of this course, participants will learn:
- The nuts and bolts of pain science
- How to explain pain to patients using metaphors
- The difference between central pain, neuropathic pain and nociceptive pain
- Practical clinical tools for the treatment of chronic pain to compliment your current manual therapy clinical skills and improve patient outcomes
- How to use graded exposure and motivational tools to increase patient compliance
This course is open to all health care professionals – licensed physiotherapists, physiotherapy students, physiotherapy assistants, occupational therapists, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, massage therapists, registered kinesiologists, medical doctors, nurses and midwives.
