Improving PF Function Through Spinal Manual Therapy Sept 2017

Course Description:

Look beyond the traditional regional approach of pelvic floor PT to understand how addressing dysfunctions of the transitional regions of the spine – from the lumbosacral region to the upper cervical spine can positively affect lumbo/pelvic dysfunction. This 1-day course is designed to expand your current practice through evidence based and biologically plausible methods of examination and intervention of both upper quarter dysfunctions and the lower quarter region. A complete review of the anatomy and physiology of the pressure systems from the glottis to the pelvic floor will be provided to expand your interventions of manual therapy, movement and exercise. The course will include an interactive format for discussion of the current concepts and the application of interventions. You will learn skills to take home right away – simple and effective manual skills to use immediately regardless of your manual therapy skills.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the presentation, the learner will be able to:

1) Review the anatomy and physiology of the glottis to the pelvic floor – including the anatomical changes with prolonged postures, including the psoas.

2) Discuss the typical dysfunctions of the transitional regions of the spine and how these regions have input to changes in physiology of the trigeminal/vagal ANS and pelvic floor function

4) Explain the relevant effects of upper quarter stiffness on fatigability of the pelvic floor muscles and training

5) Outline new concepts of intervention techniques to reduce the effects of spinal transitional region dysfunction on the respiratory, neurological and musculoskeletal systems

Online learning modules: (1 to 1.5 hours each) Required prior to the course.

  • Anatomy and physiology of the dynamic respiratory system–cervico/thoracic, diaphragm, glottis/larynx and TMJ. Making the neurological, physiological connections with the Vagal and Trigeminal alarm system.
  • Connections of the thoraco/lumbar and lumbo/sacral regions, including the psoas on the function of the pelvic floor and hip function. Changing the mindset of simply using an isometric/concentric contraction approach to improve the function of the pelvic floor. Understand why fine-tuning your approach to pelvic floor training with the use of submaximal and eccentric training to increase function and connection between the hyoid/glottis and the pelvic floor.

This course is open to all health care professionals – licensed physiotherapists, physiotherapy students, physiotherapy assistants, occupational therapists, chiropractors, naturopathic doctors, massage therapists, registered kinesiologists, medical doctors, nurses and midwives.
